How choosing the right Word of the Year can impact your business
Running a business demands a lot of your time and attention. It also requires goal-setting and strategy. But one thing that can help you and your team stay focused 365 is by choosing a Word of the Year.
In this post, we’re sharing our Word for 2020, and how this simple exercise can help you have a successful year ahead.
But before we discuss our WOTY for 2020, let’s go back in time to 2019.
Omnipresent
If you’ve been with us a while, you’ll know that our 2019 WOTY was “Omnipresent”. This word highlighted one of our main marketing goals for 2019, which was to be seen everywhere online.
We shared how and why this word was so important to us in this post here.
We also didn’t just choose a word and assume it held some sort of magic powers. Instead, we took strategic action inspired by the word.
And if you’ve selected a WOTY, you need to do the same. We tend to choose words that directly link with taking action (verb) or are a consequence or result of taking action (adjective or adverb, depending on context).
So during 2019, we were active on:
YouTube
SoundCloud
LinkedIn
Twitter
Google My Business
Facebook page
Instagram
Plus:
Emails to our list
Medium
We also did regular Facebook Live training and successful in-person training events
And we have even grown our Facebook Group Social Media Marketing for Entrepreneurs, from ±300 members to over 800 members. (If you want to join, click here).
Roughly half-way through 2019, we took stock of how much progress we were making with our WOTY – if we were living up to it and seeing any results from it. We detail our findings in this post here.
We want to encourage you to check in every few months to assess whether you’re living up to your Word, because as work and life get busy, it’s easy to lose focus.
Our 2020 Word of the Year
So now that we’ve recapped our 2019 Word, we want to reveal that our 2020 Word of the Year is “Unforgettable”.
This word ties in beautifully with last year’s word “Omnipresent” and represents a subtle shift in our focus.
While in 2019 our goal was to be seen everywhere, this year we want to be known by as many business owners and entrepreneurs as possible, and become unforgettable.
According to the “Rule of 7”, a principle created by Dr. Jeffrey Lant, people have to be exposed to your ad/message/brand at least 7 times before they would be willing to take action.
Now, obviously, this is not set in stone but the idea behind it is that people require repeated exposure to your brand before getting to know, like and trust you.
That is why boosting one Facebook post is not what we consider a marketing plan and why sometimes you need the help of professionals to drive your online campaigns.
We want to continue to be omnipresent, but take it up a level so that people think of us first when it comes to digital marketing.
How we will become Unforgettable
We plan on taking a two-pronged approach to our Word of the Year. The first deals with our free online content and social media.
As a team, we’ve divided up the responsibilities of posting on YouTube, SoundCloud, this blog etc. Our overall aim is to provide relevant, impactful and interesting information (for FREE) to everyone who wants to learn more about using social media to grow their business and profits.
By being consistent in our efforts, and helping as many people as we can with their questions, we will become unforgettable in the minds of the people we reach online.
The second way we want to be unforgettable is to our paying clients. As a digital marketing agency, we have clients all over South Africa and even more internationally, especially the USA.
We do everything from developing online campaigns and funnels, placing ads on Facebook and Instagram, to creating content for Pinterest, blogs and social media. We even have a dedicated videographer with insane camera skills. (If you want to know more about our services, click here).
We have always prided ourselves on our excellent work ethic and our commitment to getting results for our clients (ROI) but this year we want to be unforgettably good. So much so that our clients are our raving fans and send all their fellow business owners our way.
When someone is looking for a company to run ads for them, the words “Big Domino Marketing” should come instantly to mind.
How does this help you?
Well, naturally you’ll benefit by learning from people who are in this to help you make more money. We don’t just tell you what you should be doing online, we are doing it for ourselves and for our portfolio of very successful clients.
Another thing is that we don’t make false promises about digital marketing and we’ve always adopted the approach that we are in the trenches with you. We LOVE it when you kill it with a marketing campaign.
Believe us when we say we want you to have online success. And yes, we want you to come to us first when you need someone to run ads for you.
The Takeaway
If you’re struggling to choose a Word of the Year, we hope we’ve shown you that you don’t have to overthink it. You just need to choose something that unites your bigger goals for your business and will inspire your team to work with diligence and passion.
Your Word of the Year above all should be practical and something you can actually achieve. The word “successful” for instance, is really vague and doesn’t really point to a specific action.
The Word “Target” for “meet our targets this year” is also pretty uninspiring.
Choose something that makes you say: “We can do this” to all the challenges and “YES! We did it!” when you celebrate all your wins.
Have you chosen a Word of the Year for your business or even for yourself personally to keep you motivated this year? We’d love to hear what it is and why you chose it!
